WQED Multimedia offers comprehensive, challenging non-paid internships in TV Production, Radio, Communications, Business & Revenue, Educational Resources, and Publishing to college students seeking knowledge and experience in the Multimedia industry. Internships are offered for college credit, and past interns have been offered positions with the company when available.

DEVELOPMENT INTERNSHIP

Department: Development & Membership
Hours: Between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. (some nights/weekends as agreed upon)

WQED's Development Department manages the fundraising operations for mid- and major-level donors. The development intern will have the opportunity to learn about fundraising methods and donor interactions.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with writing and editing campaign and publication materials
  • Assist with production and execution of donor cultivation mailings
  • Attend development meetings and contribute ideas/opinions
  • Assist with day to day management of donor database and filing
  • Assist with WQED Multimedia special events
  • Assist with acknowledgement letters for major donors
  • Use online resources to research prospective donors
  • Assist with Member Services and other department activities, as needed

Qualifications

  • Well-organized, good writing skills and eye for detail
  • Self-directed and able to follow through independently on assigned tasks
  • Computer proficiency in Word, Excel and internet research. Database and spreadsheet experience necessary.

EDUCATION INTERNSHIP

Department: Education
Hours: Between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. (some nights as agreed upon or weekends when an event occurs)

Intern will work primarily with the Executive Director of Educational Partnerships and the Education Team on a variety of projects including the following:

  • Outreach & Clubs - reaching out to educators, parents and children with PBS resources and best practices, planning for events, tours and workshops
  • Research & Benchmarking - an investigation of new uses of technology in the classroom, best practices across public media, and new research around parent and teacher engagement.
  • Projects (an example of current projects include)
    • Math Literacy show (elementary school)
    • Science show (middle school)
    • Interactive media design and strategy
    • Social media with the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh
  • Teacher and Parent Communication - communication about opportunities and resources from PBS, locally, regionally, and nationally; planning of teacher and parent professional development
  • Assist with Education Department administration as needed

Intern must be proficient in Microsoft Office suite and an excellent writer and communicator. Experience using social media is preferred. Interns must be dynamic problem solvers with the ability to think creatively.

Education department internships run in the following time periods:

  • Fall Term - September-December
  • Spring Term - January-April
  • Summer Term - May-August

Non-credit internships are 10-20 hours a week and credit internships are unlimited based on requirements of the school. All are project-based and are highly demanding.

FOUNDATION & GOVERNMENT SUPPORT INTERNSHIP

Department: Development & Membership
Hours: Between 9am and 5pm (some nights/weekends as agreed upon)

Intern will work primarily with the Senior Director of Foundation & Government Support and the Special Events Coordinator on a variety of projects including the following:

  • Research on local and national foundations
  • Compilation of deadlines for proposals and reports
  • Foundation filing and maintenance
  • Foundation contact list maintenance
  • Writing
  • Assist with large mailings and mail merges
  • Assist with special events as needed
  • Assist with Member Services as needed

Preferably looking for someone majoring in English, Communications, Public Relations or Marketing. Experience with Microsoft Office preferred.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY INTERNSHIP

IT interns will learn the daily operations of an IT department and assist with the setup and distribution of new computers, database design and maintenance, applying software patches and troubleshooting problems in a complex multi-server environment. The interns will also assist in the design and programming of the intranet.

Interns will assist with various aspects of IT Services such as:

  • Troubleshooting hardware and software problems
  • Answering the help line and help end users
  • Working with the physical network – jacks, switches, hubs, and routers
  • Installing new computers
  • Programming work in C, Java, and SQL
  • Maintaining and creating Access databases
  • Working with Microsoft IIS and SharePoint
  • Virus and spyware protection and removal
  • Software installations and upgrades
  • Exposure to different computer systems in a broadcast environment
  • Exposure to software/network operating systems such as Novell Netware, Novell Groupwise, Novell ZENWorks, Novell Virtual Office, Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Server 2000, XP Pro, Rad Hat Linux, IIS, Symantec Anti-Virus/Endpoint Protection, Microsoft Office, Veritas BackupExec, Apache, Team Approach, ScheduAll, ProTrack, and other various programs that are used on a daily basis

Looking For A Candidate With:

  • Thorough record-keeping and system testing skills.
  • Strong analytical skills. Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems in a logical, timely and thorough fashion. Ability to improvise.
  • Self-starter who can work independently and with a team.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills for Help Desk responsibilities.
  • Interested applicants must be able to lift up to 30 pounds.

MARKETING DEPARTMENT INTERN

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research related to marketing department projects
  • Attend monthly program release meeting and prepare listings for WQED-TV (13.1 digital) and for the WQED On Air Guide included in the pagination of Pittsburgh magazine
  • Maintain select programming feedback in an Excel database and create reports as assigned
  • Distribute the bi-weekly issue of PBS' Current publication to WQED staff
  • Assist with community engagement activities
  • Assist in writing press releases and other items as assigned
  • Assist with coordination of station awards entries and prospective awards research

Qualifications

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Desire to learn and confidence in asking questions
  • Good customer relations skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint

Additional Information
  • Regular business hours at WQED are M-F, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The majority of the internship is fulfilled during those times and should be scheduled with the Intern Coordinator prior to the beginning of the internship. Note: the weekly schedule and total hours per week will be determined on whether the internship is for credit or non-credit
  • Community engagement activities may require attendance on evenings and/or weekends unless noted at the beginning of the internship or at least two weeks prior to the event date
  • Writing samples, professional references and other internship experience is a plus

MEMBERSHIP INTERN

Department: Development & Membership

    • Monthly activities

  • FM Announcements:
    • Correspondence/verification with members
    • Monthly scheduling
    • Confirmation letters
  • On-Air Pledge/Fundraising:
    • Volunteer management/correspondence
    • Schedule management
    • Volunteer records management using Microsoft Access
    • Answering pledge phones as needed during weekdays
    • Post-pledge follow up as needed
    • Other duties as needed
  • MemberCard Program:
    • Research
    • Solicit companies/organizations
    • Manage/maintain participant records
    • Manage/update online MemberCard UserGuide
  • Sustaining members:
    • Welcome/thank you letters
    • Special benefit mailings and correspondence
    • Special mailings/correspondence as needed
  • Assist with Member Services as needed

Intern must be skilled in Miscrosoft Office programs, especially Word and Excel.

ON-AIR FUNDRAISING INTERNSHIP

Department: Development & Membership
Hours: Between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. (some nights/weekends as agreed upon)

Intern will work primarily with the Senior Director of On-Air Fundraising, Associate Producer of On-Air Fundraising and Premium Coordinator on a variety of projects, including the following:

  • Assist with production of television and radio fundraising drives
  • Order and fulfillment of thank-you gifts
  • Assist with preparation of thank-you gift documentation for pledge drives
  • Research
  • Writing (letters, scripts, etc.)
  • Assist with training and supervising volunteers during membership drives
  • Filing, office organization, large mailings and data entry
  • Assist with Member Services as needed

RADIO INTERNSHIP

Position Summary

Responsibilities

  • Assist with programming and production
  • Assist with customer service
  • Prepare arts information for broadcast and web
  • Assist with day to day management of music library and MusicMaster
  • Assist with writing and editing of Pittsburgh Symphony Radio scripts
  • Edit interviews and arts news for broadcast and web
  • Make field recordings
  • Assist with archival process
  • Assist with live remotes
  • Assist in other departmental activities, as needed

Qualifications

  • Must be interested in radio production
  • Well-organized, good writing and communication skills and an eye for detail
  • Knowledge of audio editing or a desire to learn
  • Familiarity with classical music a plus

TELEVISION PRODUCTION INTERNSHIP

A television internship with WQED provides students with a unique, hands-on opportunity to learn how a nightly news magazine is produced -- from concept to actual live and taped production.

Scope of Internship:
Student interns work with reporters and producers in the field, studio and production offices of WQED.

Qualifications
Junior and Senior college students with a background in Communications, Journalism, Broadcasting, Production or Media Studies are preferred - but not required. Students who are seeking an internship to earn college credit are also preferred. This is a part-time internship, 15 - 20 hours per week, and is not a paid position.

WQED INTERACTIVE INTERNSHIP

Highly-motivated individuals sought for Internship with WQED's Interactive Department.

Interns will work with web developers and designers to provide multimedia solutions for wqed.org as well as perform regular duties to improve and maintain the website.

Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of Photoshop a must.
  • Knowledge of html and css required.
  • Knowledge of Flash and Action Scripting a plus.
  • Knowledge of desktop video and audio editing a plus.

Junior and Senior college students with a background in Communication Design are preferred - but not required. This is a part-time internship, 15 - 20 hours per week, and is not a paid position.
